Akaaka Art Publishing
AKAAKA Art Publishing was founded in Kyoto in May 2006 and is directed by Kimi Himeno. It is more than a publishing house: the same company runs a gallery space, manages artists and organises and documents events, and its list carries books on exhibitions and events alongside photobooks. The photographers are Japanese, of every generation, and the house moves between the two ends of that range: faithful reissues of landmark books, and first books by younger photographers. Hardcovers and softcovers are split roughly six to four, and the median book runs to 128 pages. A good way into AKAAKA is to read its reissues and its debuts side by side, one book from each end of the list.
