The long-awaited first photobook by Kim Sajik, a body of work built over the last ten years around questions of ethnicity, nationality, gender and identity. Each picture is a carefully set-up scene that touches the root of existence, crosses time and species and digs up labours and feelings, fusing an Asian mythical world with quotations from Western art history. As a third-generation Zainichi Korean, Kim addresses the intersecting traumas of colonialism, war, cultural displacement and subjugation in an alternate dream universe shaped by stories of wisdom passed from mothers to daughters through waves of Korean migration to Japan, and she appears as a trickster standing at the edge of another dimension. Photographs and words develop across several times and places; the cover is a vivid red and blue, with red and blue threads showing from the bare spine like wounds or stitches across a gap.

ABOUT

SpineIndex is an archive of independent books on photography and visual culture: photobooks, publications, design books and self-published editions — the kind of work that rarely makes it into bookshop windows or mainstream catalogues. It exists to document, connect, and keep visible a world of publishers, artists, and makers who operate outside conventional distribution. A living reference for anyone who takes this territory seriously — collectors, researchers, students, and the simply curious.
