Red Hook

New York, United States

Red Hook Editions describes itself as a publishing community born in Brooklyn and formed by photographers, with Jason Eskenazi, a photographer, as owner and creative director. Its model gives photographers the tools to control their work in book form: the photographers handle funding, advertising and design while keeping artistic control and ownership. The press does not accept online submissions and relies on contacts made at festivals and book fairs, and it has launched an A5 zine series, Foto-Zine, for photographers from outside Brooklyn. Its books have been nominated for the Lucie Award for Book Publisher of the Year and awarded in the IPA book category in 2025.

ABOUT

SpineIndex is an archive of independent books on photography and visual culture: photobooks, publications, design books and self-published editions — the kind of work that rarely makes it into bookshop windows or mainstream catalogues. It exists to document, connect, and keep visible a world of publishers, artists, and makers who operate outside conventional distribution. A living reference for anyone who takes this territory seriously — collectors, researchers, students, and the simply curious.
