Le Bal

Paris, France · since 2010

LE BAL was opened in Paris in 2010 by Raymond Depardon and Diane Dufour, with the support of the City of Paris, in a former ballroom behind place de Clichy, and it is a non-profit association: an independent place for exhibition, publishing, reflection and education dedicated to the contemporary image in all its forms, photography, video, film and new media. Its books are tied to that programme, among them the Carnets du BAL, a collection run with the École des hautes études en sciences sociales and the Centre national des arts plastiques, and many are co-published with other houses. Its educational arm, La Fabrique du Regard, has trained young people in and through images since 2008.

ABOUT

SpineIndex is an archive of independent books on photography and visual culture: photobooks, publications, design books and self-published editions — the kind of work that rarely makes it into bookshop windows or mainstream catalogues. It exists to document, connect, and keep visible a world of publishers, artists, and makers who operate outside conventional distribution. A living reference for anyone who takes this territory seriously — collectors, researchers, students, and the simply curious.
