Les Carnets du BAL is a series set up to work on what is at stake in the contemporary image and to take the notion of the visual document in all its variety. Each subject brings together theoretical contributions and presentations and readings of works by artists, philosophers, historians, anthropologists and critics, drawing on examples from photography, video and cinema. What do a demonstration watched by drones and a crowd modelled in computer graphics have in common? What happens when an artificial intelligence takes over the identity of a public figure to put hateful words in their mouth? Can the human eye still tell a farmer's outline from a soldier's in the viewfinder of a thermal camera? Machine-made images have long since spilled out of the military-industrial field into every sphere of life, and this volume asks what regimes of visibility they produce and whether we can still call them images at all.

ABOUT

SpineIndex is an archive of independent books on photography and visual culture: photobooks, publications, design books and self-published editions — the kind of work that rarely makes it into bookshop windows or mainstream catalogues. It exists to document, connect, and keep visible a world of publishers, artists, and makers who operate outside conventional distribution. A living reference for anyone who takes this territory seriously — collectors, researchers, students, and the simply curious.
