Archive of Modern Conflict
The Archive of Modern Conflict is a London collection first and a publisher as a consequence. Founded in 1991 around photographs of war, it grew into an enormous private holding of vernacular pictures, objects and ephemera, and its books are the archive made legible. Some start from the collection itself, with albums, postcards, newspaper morgues and microscope slides; others hand it to artists who rework it, or commission photographers to look at a city the way the archive looks at the past. The house makes books as objects, in limited runs and special editions with prints, and publishes a journal whose format changes with every issue. A newer imprint, Bone Idle, carries part of the list. Read the list as arguments about what a found photograph can become.
