Twin Palms

Los Angeles, United States · since 1981

Twin Palms Publishers grew out of Twelvetrees Press, which Jack Woody established in 1981, and it has always worked from the edge of American publishing: its own history says the books have been condemned as pornography and celebrated as classics. The site sums the list up as books of “challenging and provocative content” and “sheer beauty as objects”, which is also a working method, since they are, it says, beautifully designed and printed. Woody returned to the surviving glass-plate negatives for a Disfarmer monograph and reissued a classic as a sheet-fed gravure edition, and reissues of overlooked photographers sit beside the first monographs of younger ones. The house is based in Los Angeles, with trade distribution handled exclusively by D.A.P.

ABOUT

SpineIndex is an archive of independent books on photography and visual culture: photobooks, publications, design books and self-published editions — the kind of work that rarely makes it into bookshop windows or mainstream catalogues. It exists to document, connect, and keep visible a world of publishers, artists, and makers who operate outside conventional distribution. A living reference for anyone who takes this territory seriously — collectors, researchers, students, and the simply curious.
