Aperture

New York, United States · since 1952

Aperture was established in 1952 to advance “creative thinking, significantly expressed in words and photographs”, and it began as a quarterly magazine, launched in San Francisco and edited at first by Minor White, before it became a book publisher in the mid-1960s, together with a limited-edition print programme, with The Flame of Recognition, a book on Edward Weston. It is a non-profit publisher based in New York, and the books sit among a magazine, limited-edition prints, exhibitions, digital platforms, public and educational programmes and its PhotoBook Awards. Its stated vision is a future in which photography's democratic spirit helps build a more curious, creative and equitable world.

ABOUT

SpineIndex is an archive of independent books on photography and visual culture: photobooks, publications, design books and self-published editions — the kind of work that rarely makes it into bookshop windows or mainstream catalogues. It exists to document, connect, and keep visible a world of publishers, artists, and makers who operate outside conventional distribution. A living reference for anyone who takes this territory seriously — collectors, researchers, students, and the simply curious.
