In the late 1950s and throughout the 1960s Kwame Brathwaite used his photography to popularise the political slogan Black Is Beautiful. This monograph, the first ever dedicated to his career, tells the story of a key but under-recognised figure of the second Harlem Renaissance. Inspired by the writings of the activist and black nationalist Marcus Garvey, Brathwaite and his older brother Elombe Brath founded a collective of artists and a modelling agency whose work spread the idea through fashion, music and portraiture.

ABOUT

SpineIndex is an archive of independent books on photography and visual culture: photobooks, publications, design books and self-published editions — the kind of work that rarely makes it into bookshop windows or mainstream catalogues. It exists to document, connect, and keep visible a world of publishers, artists, and makers who operate outside conventional distribution. A living reference for anyone who takes this territory seriously — collectors, researchers, students, and the simply curious.
