Depart image

Italy

Départ pour l'Image describes itself as an independent publishing house and art book design studio based in Milan, founded by the artist Luca Reffo and the photographer Francesca Todde. The name comes from an inscription on the film of some French movies, which marked the reverse side for reel assembly and projection, and the house takes the same attitude to its editorial line: an inquiry into ways of seeing through images, at the boundary between photography and contemporary art. Editions are printed and bound in Italy with sustainable materials, and the house occasionally curates exhibitions. Its books are placed in bookshops across Europe, the United States, Japan, Australia, Korea and China, and in public libraries.

ABOUT

SpineIndex is an archive of independent books on photography and visual culture: photobooks, publications, design books and self-published editions — the kind of work that rarely makes it into bookshop windows or mainstream catalogues. It exists to document, connect, and keep visible a world of publishers, artists, and makers who operate outside conventional distribution. A living reference for anyone who takes this territory seriously — collectors, researchers, students, and the simply curious.
