Allemandi

Turin, Italy · since 1983

Allemandi started in Turin in 1983 as a newspaper house rather than a book publisher: its first venture was the monthly Il Giornale dell’Arte, a periodical that behaves like a daily, and a London sister imprint later launched The Art Newspaper. Books followed in the same spirit, rigorous art information written by recognised specialists, and the list now runs along several strands of which photography is one. Commissions from museums and institutions explain what a photography title looks like here: usually the catalogue of an exhibition or festival, often issued in two linked editions, Italian and English, sometimes drawn from an archive such as a bank’s historical collection. Read the list as a museum bookshelf rather than a photobook shelf.

ABOUT

SpineIndex is an archive of independent books on photography and visual culture: photobooks, publications, design books and self-published editions — the kind of work that rarely makes it into bookshop windows or mainstream catalogues. It exists to document, connect, and keep visible a world of publishers, artists, and makers who operate outside conventional distribution. A living reference for anyone who takes this territory seriously — collectors, researchers, students, and the simply curious.
