Journal

Stockholm, Sweden · since 1991

Journal was founded in 1991 by Gösta Flemming, an editor and designer who also edited the Swedish photography magazine Fotografisk tidskrift, and its stated aim is simply to publish photo books. It has stuck to that. Its list is made mainly of Swedish and Norwegian photographers, with a few internationally known names in the mix, so it reads as a map of Nordic photobook-making since the early 1990s. The site groups its books as current titles, special editions, out-of-stock books and related titles, which makes the back catalogue as visible as the new releases. Hardcovers dominate, and special editions are treated as a collection of their own rather than as a footnote to the regular ones.

ABOUT

SpineIndex is an archive of independent books on photography and visual culture: photobooks, publications, design books and self-published editions — the kind of work that rarely makes it into bookshop windows or mainstream catalogues. It exists to document, connect, and keep visible a world of publishers, artists, and makers who operate outside conventional distribution. A living reference for anyone who takes this territory seriously — collectors, researchers, students, and the simply curious.
