Les Carnets du BAL is a series set up to work on what is at stake in the contemporary image and to take the notion of the visual document in all its variety. Each subject brings together theoretical contributions and presentations and readings of works by artists, philosophers, historians, anthropologists and critics, drawing on examples from photography, video and cinema. We are used to seeing images first as spatial representations, as cuts into space, and yet an image is as much time as space. If it works on time, fixing it or setting it moving, time also works on the image, transforming it and even making it disappear — and that time is not single but multiple and interlaced.
