In 2007 Stéphane Duroy published Unknown, made of photographs taken during his many journeys across the United States, from New York to Montana; the volume reads as a hymn to anonymous rebels and to the exiled. Since 2009 he has been intervening on copies of that book: because of a slight printing fault he recovered a hundred or so unsold copies and has been painting, cutting, gluing and covering their pages ever since, so that each becomes a unique object — and this is the volume that gathers that second life.

ABOUT

SpineIndex is an archive of independent books on photography and visual culture: photobooks, publications, design books and self-published editions — the kind of work that rarely makes it into bookshop windows or mainstream catalogues. It exists to document, connect, and keep visible a world of publishers, artists, and makers who operate outside conventional distribution. A living reference for anyone who takes this territory seriously — collectors, researchers, students, and the simply curious.
