Facsimile reissue of the twelve fanzines published in 1979

Few bodies of work render the atmosphere of 1970s Tokyo as Kitajima did. Steidl and LE BAL reissue in facsimile Photo Express: Tokyo, his legendary series: monochrome punk fanzines that came out of work shown from January to December 1979 at the CAMP gallery in Tokyo, the first independent photography gallery there. The booklets were published every month in step with the exhibitions, in a raw energy of grain, contrast and cropping that matches the night-time city they came from.

ABOUT

SpineIndex is an archive of independent books on photography and visual culture: photobooks, publications, design books and self-published editions — the kind of work that rarely makes it into bookshop windows or mainstream catalogues. It exists to document, connect, and keep visible a world of publishers, artists, and makers who operate outside conventional distribution. A living reference for anyone who takes this territory seriously — collectors, researchers, students, and the simply curious.
