Brings together two bodies of work, the 2020 photobook A New River and the moving-image work My Cherry, with newly made photographs woven through the sequence, as a single continuous journey. Set in the landscapes of Fukushima after the Great East Japan Earthquake, the book is less about the disaster than about Ai Iwane's exploration over more than twenty years of land and memory, people and nature, life and death. Living beside land that is returning to nature, she confronts the memory of her younger sister, who died by suicide, and this deeply personal loss resonates with the memories embedded in the landscape. Cherry blossoms, forests, light, fireworks and traces of human presence dissolve the boundaries between the living and the dead. An essay by Pauline Vermare, curator of photography at the Brooklyn Museum, is included.

ABOUT

SpineIndex is an archive of independent books on photography and visual culture: photobooks, publications, design books and self-published editions — the kind of work that rarely makes it into bookshop windows or mainstream catalogues. It exists to document, connect, and keep visible a world of publishers, artists, and makers who operate outside conventional distribution. A living reference for anyone who takes this territory seriously — collectors, researchers, students, and the simply curious.
