Photographs of Okinawa by Linda Iha, who places herself within an Okinawan history she did not live through and has moved back and forth between the island and the world of the military bases, something she always wanted to avoid facing and speaking about. The book took a long time to appear because, as she kept photographing, she kept making excuses for her indecision about where to draw a line and bring everything together. One photograph shows tattoos of a shisa and a skull, laid on concrete and filmed on video while an ant walks across it and the light shifts: even on video what the photograph holds does not move, only time passes, which seemed to overlap with Okinawa, where all kinds of things are constantly happening. Her interest in movie poster design was one of the things that first led her to photography.

ABOUT

SpineIndex is an archive of independent books on photography and visual culture: photobooks, publications, design books and self-published editions — the kind of work that rarely makes it into bookshop windows or mainstream catalogues. It exists to document, connect, and keep visible a world of publishers, artists, and makers who operate outside conventional distribution. A living reference for anyone who takes this territory seriously — collectors, researchers, students, and the simply curious.
