A new edition of the book on Eiko Yamazawa, a pioneer who opened a unique abstract language through repeated experiments in forming images with photography. It centres on the colour and monochrome abstract series What I Am Doing, made in the 1970s and 1980s, which includes highly conceptual, self-referential works such as pictures of her own camera equipment and re-photographs of earlier work, and it reproduces in full her 1962 photobook Far and Near, which shows the origins of her abstraction. Four chapters run backwards in time through her encounters with American photography, from the West Coast photographers and American advertising work to her early portraits, wartime pictures and commercial work, with letters, essays and reference materials. After retiring in 1960 she turned to experimental abstract colour work that shared little with the mainstream of Japanese photography.

ABOUT

SpineIndex is an archive of independent books on photography and visual culture: photobooks, publications, design books and self-published editions — the kind of work that rarely makes it into bookshop windows or mainstream catalogues. It exists to document, connect, and keep visible a world of publishers, artists, and makers who operate outside conventional distribution. A living reference for anyone who takes this territory seriously — collectors, researchers, students, and the simply curious.
