About 580 photographs
Book design by Kaoru Kasai
Forty years of Yoshihiko Ueda's work in 768 pages, from his best-known series to unpublished early pictures and the newest work, about 580 images that he developed and printed himself. Forests, family, rivers, buildings, specimens, paper, an apple tree and portraits: free of the frameworks of art and advertising, his consistently sincere and sharp gaze catches the motifs of the world at their best moment. The English title points to pictures backed by intuition and made where chance and necessity cross. In his own text Ueda argues that a photograph records a particular person on a particular day, at a particular time and place, and that the more casual and unplanned the picture, the more vividly it later shows the raw situation of that moment.
