Photographs by Keiko Mizukai, who for 22 years has travelled Japan alone with no set destination, sleeping in her beloved Volvo 240, of the people and landscapes she meets. Trees at night in the headlights, a sunset on a riverbank: the scenery reflected in the passing window is always new and touches memory. Portraits are born where the time of her journey meets the daily life of the people she visits, with a strangely nostalgic bearing that fixes the time spent face to face, and then the journey goes on. The car supports the solitude and freedom of a trip close to an adventure, and what shows up in the headlights may be a relationship with all kinds of unknowns.

ABOUT

SpineIndex is an archive of independent books on photography and visual culture: photobooks, publications, design books and self-published editions — the kind of work that rarely makes it into bookshop windows or mainstream catalogues. It exists to document, connect, and keep visible a world of publishers, artists, and makers who operate outside conventional distribution. A living reference for anyone who takes this territory seriously — collectors, researchers, students, and the simply curious.
