The first photobook by Lily Night, born in 1988 in Harbin, China, and living in Tokyo: the title joins abstract and obscura, a dark box that is the origin of her thinking and making. It grows out of photographs taken during a three-day visit by her parents from China to the apartment where she lived alone in Tokyo. A body that enters a space, the act that opens the body as a space, the images that arise from that act: they make us sense nodes of memory that have left the story of the family behind, and time folding in on itself, an epic without a story. The book also holds the paradox of nesting, a spatial viewpoint that tries to receive what lies unseen outside the frame, and proposes a new dark box of photography that looks at individual life and society together.

ABOUT

The project

SpineIndex is an archive of independent books on photography and visual culture: photobooks, publications, design books and self-published editions — the kind of work that rarely makes it into bookshop windows or mainstream catalogues. It exists to document, connect, and keep visible a world of publishers, artists, and makers who operate outside conventional distribution. A living reference for anyone who takes this territory seriously — collectors, researchers, students, and the simply curious.

Images and rights

Covers, interior pages and descriptions are shown to introduce and identify the books, always crediting publisher, author and photographer and linking back to the publisher. We ask publishers for their permission, and we remove anything on request within 7 days. If you are a publisher, an author or a photographer and you want something changed or removed, write to info@spineindex.it.
