Photographs made since 2013 around Narita Airport, which, more than half a century after its opening, remains unfinished and carries the history of fierce opposition to its construction. Tadataka Wakayama first stopped near the airport in 2013, prompted by simple curiosity about its present state, and in the Toho and Tenjinmine districts of Narita City found farmland and housing of a distinctly suburban character, transformed from what must once have been pastoral land, and the homogenised environments now found all over Japan. The pictures do not explain events or take sides: they show the lingering presence of places after something has happened and spaces whose meaning stays undecided, at the point where the boundaries between past and present, inside and outside, public and private blur. He walked around the airport, mostly looking in the direction of take-offs and landings. The suburban condition he observed echoes what Edward Relph calls placelessness.
