A new body of work following terra of 2019, in which Aki Goto widens his photography from forests submerged in lakes to the submarine mountains and caves that volcanoes leave behind. Sensing the sound of waves reaching deep into his ears and pressing on against abrupt winds, he perceives the landscape as if listening to it visually, and in the sea off the Izu Peninsula after a typhoon he pressed the shutter amid a wavering sense of up and down, near and far. Places gradually revert to a time before they were given words and meaning: light distorts, spatial contours fade and water images appear in unfinished form. To make the book he pinned prints at random on a wall and watched the connections and the tension between images, then arranged an order, like Hans Hofmann's push and pull, of light and colour tone.

ABOUT

SpineIndex is an archive of independent books on photography and visual culture: photobooks, publications, design books and self-published editions — the kind of work that rarely makes it into bookshop windows or mainstream catalogues. It exists to document, connect, and keep visible a world of publishers, artists, and makers who operate outside conventional distribution. A living reference for anyone who takes this territory seriously — collectors, researchers, students, and the simply curious.
