Following the face of the earth (terra) towards a landscape never seen before. A series made by asking how Japanese landscape would look if seen not on a human time scale but within the immense flow of time of the planet Earth. Aki Goto walks into the landscape and reacts to its rhythm: what catches the retina is not a place but light, time, colour, form, sound, temperature, smell and wind. Not a view to be taken in, but a landscape that sheds sentiment and the sense of deja vu and accepts constant change, where the accumulation of time and the instant, landscape and snapshot, cross violently. By translating the landscape seen by the naked eye into a flat photograph, the traces of time deposited in present light and landscape emerge, and he sees in them the fundamental beauty of a planet continuing from ancient times. The places are mostly tourist sites and mountains anyone can climb, seen as moving bodies like living things.

ABOUT

The project

SpineIndex is an archive of independent books on photography and visual culture: photobooks, publications, design books and self-published editions — the kind of work that rarely makes it into bookshop windows or mainstream catalogues. It exists to document, connect, and keep visible a world of publishers, artists, and makers who operate outside conventional distribution. A living reference for anyone who takes this territory seriously — collectors, researchers, students, and the simply curious.

Images and rights

Covers, interior pages and descriptions are shown to introduce and identify the books, always crediting publisher, author and photographer and linking back to the publisher. We ask publishers for their permission, and we remove anything on request within 7 days. If you are a publisher, an author or a photographer and you want something changed or removed, write to info@spineindex.it.
