After renovating the house where his grandparents and father once lived and turning it into his atelier, Yoshiyuki Okuyama found more than a hundred family photo albums while tidying a closet, and they became the starting point for this photobook. He kept turning the pages not out of nostalgia alone: looking at the pictures of his parents and grandparents, he was reminded that although they belonged to the collective called family and were related to him as parents and grandparents, they were also individuals. When the histories of individuals accumulate within the framework of a family, two things emerge at once, an almost miraculous continuity of life passed on through the countless choices of earlier generations and the moral obligations that come with this gift, and a life that is never enclosed in a private realm.

ABOUT

SpineIndex is an archive of independent books on photography and visual culture: photobooks, publications, design books and self-published editions — the kind of work that rarely makes it into bookshop windows or mainstream catalogues. It exists to document, connect, and keep visible a world of publishers, artists, and makers who operate outside conventional distribution. A living reference for anyone who takes this territory seriously — collectors, researchers, students, and the simply curious.
