The first photobook by the Taiwan-born photographer Lin Shihyen: portraits of people who live with self-harm, photographed after she invited volunteers to take part. In soft natural light a single person is quietly lit within the surrounding scene, with shadows that add depth and air that seems to have volume. Lin has self-harmed for fourteen years; asked by her parents and her psychiatrist whether she wanted to die, she says she began out of fear of death, frightened by the red flowing from cut skin, a reaction she now reads as a desire to live, and she wanted to see with her own eyes the strength inherent in life. Scars that live with time, the irregularity born of life, the flicker of living: the pictures say that pain in daily life breathes through light, and that each person is connected to the others through loneliness. Winner of the 2024 Sagamihara Photography Newcomer Encouragement Award.

ABOUT

SpineIndex is an archive of independent books on photography and visual culture: photobooks, publications, design books and self-published editions — the kind of work that rarely makes it into bookshop windows or mainstream catalogues. It exists to document, connect, and keep visible a world of publishers, artists, and makers who operate outside conventional distribution. A living reference for anyone who takes this territory seriously — collectors, researchers, students, and the simply curious.
