Photographs that present the photograph as an image of emptiness. A Buddhist priest as well as a photographer, Akiyoshi Taniguchi, in a pine forest linked with the Zen monk Hakuin, takes off his glasses and photographs without seeing the numbers on the camera or whether the picture is in focus, a way of grasping emptiness. He then notices the pixels in the bark of the pines and gives himself to a digital camera that focuses automatically, a medium he has long suspected of lying and turning things into arbitrary representations, and finally burns a photograph as a memorial offering. An attached sheet shows a representation generated by an algorithm by Masahiro Ito and a tear jar made from the ashes of the print by Yuki Tawada. The book asks about the self, expression and representation from the root of Buddhism and photography, with a contribution by the photographer Chihiro Minato.

ABOUT

SpineIndex is an archive of independent books on photography and visual culture: photobooks, publications, design books and self-published editions — the kind of work that rarely makes it into bookshop windows or mainstream catalogues. It exists to document, connect, and keep visible a world of publishers, artists, and makers who operate outside conventional distribution. A living reference for anyone who takes this territory seriously — collectors, researchers, students, and the simply curious.
