At 544 pages, Kikuji Kawada's Vortex is made of pictures chosen from the vast quantity of work he has put online on his Instagram account over recent years. It is at once a distillation of the refined, sharp view of the contemporary world held by an artist then aged eighty-nine, and the culmination of a sensibility and an alertness to urban chaos that have defined his career since the 1960s.
