Text by Kenzaburo Oe, “Map”, and by Kikuji Kawada, “On the re-reprint of Chizu”

The original 1965 volume is a legendary one, virtually impossible to catch sight of today.

While relentlessly tracking the stains scattered across the walls and ceiling of the Hiroshima Peace Memorial, Kawada projects memories of the war through young soldiers' portraits and letters, ruined fortresses and the like. At the same time his pictures of iron scrap at factories, Lucky Strike boxes brought in by the occupation forces and dumped Coca-Cola bottles document the process of transformation in postwar Japan.

This long-awaited new edition is a complete reprint, adopting Kohei Sugiura's original peculiar design with every picture running across two pages.

ABOUT

SpineIndex is an archive of independent books on photography and visual culture: photobooks, publications, design books and self-published editions — the kind of work that rarely makes it into bookshop windows or mainstream catalogues. It exists to document, connect, and keep visible a world of publishers, artists, and makers who operate outside conventional distribution. A living reference for anyone who takes this territory seriously — collectors, researchers, students, and the simply curious.
