Book design by Naoko Nakui
The first photobook by Shun Kataoka, a series made from 2010 to the present in a single garden where his grandfather grew vegetables and plants for half a century, weeding and watering, making compost from kitchen leftovers, mixing soils for each plant and building trellises and stakes by hand from odds and ends of daily life. When the old man was around eighty things changed: self-seeded plants began to grow wild, and the two forces, plants growing freely and the grandfather's hand, cross in colour film pictures of dense, endlessly renewing greenery. After he died, in the photographer's fourth year, the planter of the seeds was absent, yet his handmade frames remain and the rustle of leaves never stops. The binding evokes a nostalgic green binder: coexistence of plants and people, a universe that starts from a garden.
