Shortlisted, Dummy Award 2026

Photobook dummy by Massimo Mastrorillo (Italy), shortlisted for the Dummy Award 2026. Attacking assets is the most effective means to fight Mafia organisations. The project The Sea Is Us grew out of this idea: it looks at the assets seized or confiscated from those organisations to investigate their roots, their view of the world and the connective tissue tying them to the life of an ordinary citizen. The project follows the money. The places include a five-storey building overlooking the Strait of Messina in Reggio Calabria, a farmhouse in Mesagne once belonging to a Sacra Corona Unita boss, and a villa in Casal di Principe seized from Francesco Schiavone, known as Sandokan. Many are now assigned to cooperatives such as Terre di Puglia-Libera Terra, La Forza del Silenzio and Aldilà dei sogni, which run farming, social and educational projects on the confiscated land and properties. The Dummy Award, organised by the PhotoBookMuseum in Cologne, shortlisted 48 unpublished dummies from about 325 entries from more than 45 countries; the shortlist travels on a world tour of photography events and venues.

ABOUT

The project

SpineIndex is an archive of independent books on photography and visual culture: photobooks, publications, design books and self-published editions — the kind of work that rarely makes it into bookshop windows or mainstream catalogues. It exists to document, connect, and keep visible a world of publishers, artists, and makers who operate outside conventional distribution. A living reference for anyone who takes this territory seriously — collectors, researchers, students, and the simply curious.

Images and rights

Covers, interior pages and descriptions are shown to introduce and identify the books, always crediting publisher, author and photographer and linking back to the publisher. We ask publishers for their permission, and we remove anything on request within 7 days. If you are a publisher, an author or a photographer and you want something changed or removed, write to info@spineindex.it.
