Shortlisted, Dummy Award 2026

Photobook dummy by Calvin Hein and Kay Kwabia (Germany and Ghana), shortlisted for the Dummy Award 2026. The book is a collaborative project that explores identity, belonging and cultural connection between Ghana and its diaspora through photography, archives and interviews. It creates a dialogue between lived experience and memory, reflecting on how identity is shaped, lost and reconnected across distance. The dark grey cover shows a high-contrast portrait of a person in a crocheted hood and a knitted sweater, with the title in black letters across the top and a gauze strip along the spine. The Dummy Award, organised by the PhotoBookMuseum in Cologne, shortlisted 48 unpublished dummies from about 325 entries from more than 45 countries; the shortlist travels on a world tour of photography events and venues.

ABOUT

SpineIndex is an archive of independent books on photography and visual culture: photobooks, publications, design books and self-published editions — the kind of work that rarely makes it into bookshop windows or mainstream catalogues. It exists to document, connect, and keep visible a world of publishers, artists, and makers who operate outside conventional distribution. A living reference for anyone who takes this territory seriously — collectors, researchers, students, and the simply curious.
