Shortlisted, Dummy Award 2026

Photobook dummy by Sachiko Saito (Japan), shortlisted for the Dummy Award 2026. The book is about a Kurdish community of more than 2,000 people on the outskirts of Tokyo, who fled Turkey's harsh assimilation policies and applied for refugee status in Japan. Because the refugee recognition rate in Japan is extremely low, some of them, including children born in Japan, must live as undocumented residents, often lumped together as illegal aliens and subjected to discrimination and prejudice; in 2024 a revised immigration law imposed even harsher conditions on asylum seekers, and anti-foreigner sentiment has grown. The title comes from a Turkish phrase written in a notebook by a young man the photographer portrayed with an instant camera: not now, but one day, so keep going. Made between 2018 and 2025, the project looks at lives suspended between despair and hope, witnessing their vulnerability, fragility and humanity, and at the personal memories and emotions behind the immigration system, in the hope of opening a dialogue in which people acknowledge one another's presence. The Dummy Award, organised by the PhotoBookMuseum in Cologne, shortlisted 48 unpublished dummies from about 325 entries from more than 45 countries; the shortlist travels on a world tour of photography events and venues.

ABOUT

SpineIndex is an archive of independent books on photography and visual culture: photobooks, publications, design books and self-published editions — the kind of work that rarely makes it into bookshop windows or mainstream catalogues. It exists to document, connect, and keep visible a world of publishers, artists, and makers who operate outside conventional distribution. A living reference for anyone who takes this territory seriously — collectors, researchers, students, and the simply curious.
