Shortlisted, Dummy Award 2026

Photobook dummy by David Farrell (Ireland), shortlisted for the Dummy Award 2026. The work arises from the devastating floods of 2023, which destroyed significant parts of the photographer's archive, recently moved from Dublin. It is perhaps a form of fundamental aftermath photography; at its core is the inherent tangibility of analogue photography in evidencing that which was transient and traumatic in a physical form. It is an unintended archive of an archive of memory and loss. The cover is a stark black-and-white image of a pale, ghost-like standing figure against dark, streaked water, with the title in white serif capitals. The Dummy Award, organised by the PhotoBookMuseum in Cologne, shortlisted 48 unpublished dummies from about 325 entries from more than 45 countries; the shortlist travels on a world tour of photography events and venues.

ABOUT

SpineIndex is an archive of independent books on photography and visual culture: photobooks, publications, design books and self-published editions — the kind of work that rarely makes it into bookshop windows or mainstream catalogues. It exists to document, connect, and keep visible a world of publishers, artists, and makers who operate outside conventional distribution. A living reference for anyone who takes this territory seriously — collectors, researchers, students, and the simply curious.
