Japan today seen through ironworks and die-making. The blast furnace at the heart of a steelworks was likened to a womb, in the old Japanese idea that spirits dwell in things and that iron is a living thing. Using his student training in the chemical reactions involved, Seido Kino reported on the handing down of skills at a steelworks in Fukuyama, Hiroshima, where baby-boomers and millennials work together with different values about work. He noted how the town had developed past recognition during the years of high growth and, with the help of local people, overlaid old photographs to make visible the gap and the continuity of time. He then visited his father's small factory, where foreign workers now work alongside the family, and saw emerging countries chasing growth permeating Japan: two manufacturing sites that tell of Japan now.
