The book of a leading figure of Italian photography, his two hundred and sixty-third, with a hundred and twenty previously unseen images. A photographer since 1954, with seventy years of work behind him, Gianni Berengo Gardin was among the most representative interpreters of the Italian and international scene. As happened with the authors of the silver-salt age, when photographing meant keeping the negatives and choosing on a contact sheet the one picture that seemed at that moment the right one to publish, a great archive like his still holds many hidden treasures. So, through careful selection, a set of new pictures has now surfaced that had never been seen before: photographs left behind at the time, buried under others or simply passed over at that moment. The book presents them to the public for the first time, arranged in two acts, with photographs that range from social enquiry to daily life.

ABOUT

The project

SpineIndex is an archive of independent books on photography and visual culture: photobooks, publications, design books and self-published editions — the kind of work that rarely makes it into bookshop windows or mainstream catalogues. It exists to document, connect, and keep visible a world of publishers, artists, and makers who operate outside conventional distribution. A living reference for anyone who takes this territory seriously — collectors, researchers, students, and the simply curious.

Images and rights

Covers, interior pages and descriptions are shown to introduce and identify the books, always crediting publisher, author and photographer and linking back to the publisher. We ask publishers for their permission, and we remove anything on request within 7 days. If you are a publisher, an author or a photographer and you want something changed or removed, write to info@spineindex.it.
