FotoNote series
The volume devoted to Gianni Berengo Gardin in the long-running FotoNote series appears in a new and colourful graphic dress with a careful selection of the most telling images by the great master. This new, updated edition gathers his most representative shots — from the Venice of the fifties, his own city, to the recent pictures of the great cruise ships on the lagoon — introduced by a text from Giovanna Calvenzi and accompanied by updated biographical notes and bibliographical references. A photographer since 1954, Berengo Gardin was among the most active, prolific and representative authors in Italy. He made countless reportages, published more than two hundred and sixty books and mounted a great many exhibitions, and won important prizes that confirmed him as a sensitive and involved interpreter of Italian reality, among them the Leica Oskar Barnack, the Lucie Award for lifetime achievement, the Kapuscinski prize for reportage and the Leica Hall of Fame Award. All his work as a reporter is marked by an intense humanism shot through with irony; his proverbial understatement, which protects him from readings that are too violent, and the respect he shows before reality make him one of the most notable narrators of contemporary society.
