Preface by Colin Westerbeck
The first gathering of the colour work of Vivian Maier. The book carries a foreword by the world-famous Joel Meyerowitz and a preface by the editor, followed by a sequence of more than a hundred and fifty images, many of them unpublished, that tell of American daily life between the fifties and the middle of the seventies. At a time when colour was viewed with suspicion, using it was a brave thing to do: she, whose fame came only after her death and by chance, confirms once more her high degree of professionalism and of experiment. The two texts examine the nature of this work, comparing it with the black-and-white pictures and with the images of authors close to her such as Eugène Atget and Lee Friedlander, throwing light on the style and the beauty. Long taken for a nanny with a hobby, and with a talent often relegated to the amateur ranks, she proves with her choice of colour to be a true pioneer of the genre.
