Conversation between Margherita Guccione and the author

A book by Gianni Berengo Gardin with a text by Edoardo Albinati, enriched by a preface from Giovanna Melandri, a text by Alessandra Mauro and a conversation between Margherita Guccione and the author. The title recalls the celebrated volume edited by Cesare Colombo that came out in 1970, an anthology of his work which bore witness to the weight of his way of looking, of his method and of his trade in telling his own time through images. This volume proposes a new visual account devoted to Italy and made of nearly two hundred pictures, some famous, others less known, others still unpublished: a long black-and-white sequence that stops in perfect images the great moments and the situations of a plain and splendid ordinariness — figures, blazing reportages, landscapes we know and hope will never change. "I remain a man who for years has been trying to write with the camera," he says, "the true instrument through which I manage to express myself, which I try to use exactly as a writer uses his pen, in order to go on telling the world I have before my eyes and in my head."

ABOUT

SpineIndex is an archive of independent books on photography and visual culture: photobooks, publications, design books and self-published editions — the kind of work that rarely makes it into bookshop windows or mainstream catalogues. It exists to document, connect, and keep visible a world of publishers, artists, and makers who operate outside conventional distribution. A living reference for anyone who takes this territory seriously — collectors, researchers, students, and the simply curious.
