Essay by Paolo Pontoniere

The complete archive of the Neapolitan photographer Toty Ruggieri, who followed the local underground scene from 1984 to 1987, reproduced here for the first time. His visual language leaves no room for formalism and leads us in the first person into the artistic community of Naples, with the Diamond Dogs as its symbol: a small space where human presence, gestures and looks mark the change under way. While the media focused on urban decay, artists of every discipline began the cultural rebirth of the city after the 1980 earthquake, using the venue for live concerts, performances and experimental theatre. With an essay by Paolo Pontoniere.

ABOUT

SpineIndex is an archive of independent books on photography and visual culture: photobooks, publications, design books and self-published editions — the kind of work that rarely makes it into bookshop windows or mainstream catalogues. It exists to document, connect, and keep visible a world of publishers, artists, and makers who operate outside conventional distribution. A living reference for anyone who takes this territory seriously — collectors, researchers, students, and the simply curious.
