Anastatic reprint of the 1975 artist book

The first anastatic reprint of Fabio Mauri's artist book, first published in 1975. Its pictures were not taken by the author: they are details of war magazines, stamped so as to add a meaning, an undue appropriation. First shot by photographers present at the events, then reproduced in propaganda as partial communication, collected as neutral history, removed again from their archaeological contexts and cut according to a new thesis, they are divided between the signs of language and the man of those signs and reset in sequences that express an interpretative idea in linguistic, ideological terms. The same images, from English and German magazines, were shown in series as an installation.

ABOUT

SpineIndex is an archive of independent books on photography and visual culture: photobooks, publications, design books and self-published editions — the kind of work that rarely makes it into bookshop windows or mainstream catalogues. It exists to document, connect, and keep visible a world of publishers, artists, and makers who operate outside conventional distribution. A living reference for anyone who takes this territory seriously — collectors, researchers, students, and the simply curious.
