BILD (literally "picture") is the German tabloid founded by Axel Springer in 1952, described as mainly publishing "fear, tits and the weather report" and with the widest reach of any German print publication. The book is printed entirely on a Risograph, the same kind of printer Axel Springer Verlag uses for the paper's daily headlines. Over seven years Claudio Pogo collected and erased all the typography from more than 500 front pages of the newspaper; starting with the very first issue of 1952, the book gathers 444 front pages covering fifty years of the tabloid's history, breaking the paper down to its pure visual language of photographs and graphic elements.

ABOUT

SpineIndex is an archive of independent books on photography and visual culture: photobooks, publications, design books and self-published editions — the kind of work that rarely makes it into bookshop windows or mainstream catalogues. It exists to document, connect, and keep visible a world of publishers, artists, and makers who operate outside conventional distribution. A living reference for anyone who takes this territory seriously — collectors, researchers, students, and the simply curious.
