The first collection of the artist Hiroshi Nomura, Eyes announces itself as a book of art works. The works are colour photographs of everyday scenes to which two simple black-and-white plastic eyes have been added: am I seeing, or being seen? When eyes are attached to everything, daily life is turned over and another dimension shows its face, a fantasy for adults that tosses the viewer around and draws them into Nomura's world. This small gesture makes something like a drinking glass look just a little different, and it becomes impossible to see it as just a glass. An external hard drive seems to lurk next to a nearby monitor and desktop computer, while a blade of grass turns into a strange sort of insect. Daido Moriyama wrote of finding himself surrounded by countless eyeballs, in an afternoon of mescaline and a night of adrenaline, innocent playtime for Nomura. Eyes is a thoroughly playful work.

ABOUT

The project

SpineIndex is an archive of independent books on photography and visual culture: photobooks, publications, design books and self-published editions — the kind of work that rarely makes it into bookshop windows or mainstream catalogues. It exists to document, connect, and keep visible a world of publishers, artists, and makers who operate outside conventional distribution. A living reference for anyone who takes this territory seriously — collectors, researchers, students, and the simply curious.

Images and rights

Covers, interior pages and descriptions are shown to introduce and identify the books, always crediting publisher, author and photographer and linking back to the publisher. We ask publishers for their permission, and we remove anything on request within 7 days. If you are a publisher, an author or a photographer and you want something changed or removed, write to info@spineindex.it.
