A book of essays, bilingual in Japanese and English, by the critic Mariko Takeuchi, her first single-authored book after more than fifteen years of writing on photography and art. It collects texts on eleven Japanese photographers, among them Ken Domon, Risaku Suzuki and Lieko Shiga, chosen from her earlier writing together with a newly written opening essay, all translated into English. The questions beneath them are what it means to look at photographs and what it means to imagine the pain of others, and the book also considers gender in art and photography. Production notes on the project Intended Consequences: Rwandan Children Born of Rape are included. Two of the works discussed in each text are pasted into the pages in colour, not as illustrations but as doors to texts that would not exist without these photographs.
