Introduction by Gianluca Riccio

A photographic and anthropological narration of the Historical Archive kept by the Fondazione Banco di Napoli, the largest archive of banking documents in the world, born of an artistic residency during which Biasiucci lived for about three months among its 330 rooms. The images follow one another in a striking layout: the series of files kept in the archive appear as a static but imposing work which in its stillness reveals all the driving force of past history. "Heedless of their origin and purpose, Biasiucci portrays the files piece by piece and then reassembles them in a sequence freed from chronology, so that History no longer appears as a temporal field but a spatial one, a secret atlas or the ideal model of a city within the city. Side by side again, the files offer themselves to the gaze like the pieces of a new urban skyline, the profile of a city of memory built on layers of traces of the stories and uncertain identities that animated and crossed it" (Gianluca Riccio).

ABOUT

The project

SpineIndex is an archive of independent books on photography and visual culture: photobooks, publications, design books and self-published editions — the kind of work that rarely makes it into bookshop windows or mainstream catalogues. It exists to document, connect, and keep visible a world of publishers, artists, and makers who operate outside conventional distribution. A living reference for anyone who takes this territory seriously — collectors, researchers, students, and the simply curious.

Images and rights

Covers, interior pages and descriptions are shown to introduce and identify the books, always crediting publisher, author and photographer and linking back to the publisher. We ask publishers for their permission, and we remove anything on request within 7 days. If you are a publisher, an author or a photographer and you want something changed or removed, write to info@spineindex.it.
