The catalogue published for the monographic exhibition held in 2023 at Palazzo Ducale in Genoa, curated by Paolo Falcone and produced with the Archivio Letizia Battaglia, the Fondazione Falcone per le Arti and the Palazzo Ducale Fondazione per la Cultura. Exhibition and catalogue alike bear witness to Italian life and society with photographs from the great photographer’s historical archive. For some fifty years Letizia Battaglia photographed, watched and lived her time intensely, and above all her city, Palermo. The book is a homage to her work, to her intense and new way of looking, to her hunger for freedom and to her being always a woman against the grain: an unbroken album that moves from Milan to the face of Pier Paolo Pasolini, from the many killed by the mafia to the unwitting elegance of the little girls of the Cala quarter in Palermo, and then the religious processions, the faces of Piersanti Mattarella and Giovanni Falcone, and the ferocious boss Leoluca Bagarella. Accompanied by a long text from the curator, a contribution by Roberto Andò and an account by Giosuè Calaciura, the images run through the volume in a single, formidable sequence.

ABOUT

The project

SpineIndex is an archive of independent books on photography and visual culture: photobooks, publications, design books and self-published editions — the kind of work that rarely makes it into bookshop windows or mainstream catalogues. It exists to document, connect, and keep visible a world of publishers, artists, and makers who operate outside conventional distribution. A living reference for anyone who takes this territory seriously — collectors, researchers, students, and the simply curious.

Images and rights

Covers, interior pages and descriptions are shown to introduce and identify the books, always crediting publisher, author and photographer and linking back to the publisher. We ask publishers for their permission, and we remove anything on request within 7 days. If you are a publisher, an author or a photographer and you want something changed or removed, write to info@spineindex.it.
