Exhibition catalogue, The Photographers’ Gallery, London

Catalogue of the monographic exhibition at The Photographers’ Gallery in London (8 October 2024 - 23 February 2025), curated by Paolo Falcone with the Letizia Battaglia Archive and the Fondazione Falcone per le Arti. The exhibition, like the catalogue, bears witness to Italian life and society with pictures from the great photographer’s historical archive. For about fifty years Letizia Battaglia photographed, observed and intensely lived her time and above all her city, Palermo: a tribute to her work, her intense and new gaze, her longing for freedom and her always being a woman against the tide. An uninterrupted album that goes from Milan to the face of Pier Paolo Pasolini, from the many killed by the Mafia to the unaware elegance of the little girls of the Cala quarter in Palermo; then the religious processions, the faces of Piersanti Mattarella and Giovanni Falcone, up to the ferocious boss Leoluca Bagarella. As Shoair Mavlian, director of The Photographers’ Gallery, writes, her images can be seen "through the lens of life; something chaotic, random, unpredictable, cruel and dangerous, but also full of love and empathy".

ABOUT

The project

SpineIndex is an archive of independent books on photography and visual culture: photobooks, publications, design books and self-published editions — the kind of work that rarely makes it into bookshop windows or mainstream catalogues. It exists to document, connect, and keep visible a world of publishers, artists, and makers who operate outside conventional distribution. A living reference for anyone who takes this territory seriously — collectors, researchers, students, and the simply curious.

Images and rights

Covers, interior pages and descriptions are shown to introduce and identify the books, always crediting publisher, author and photographer and linking back to the publisher. We ask publishers for their permission, and we remove anything on request within 7 days. If you are a publisher, an author or a photographer and you want something changed or removed, write to info@spineindex.it.
