afterword by Mikhail Ryklin (Moscow, 10-12 January 1995)
Igor Mukhin's photographs of Soviet-era monuments - some newly erected, others mid-demolition, occasionally indistinguishable from one another without the giveaway of a crane or a horse - register an era of public monuments that has ended, its images quietly abandoned to oblivion by a state that no longer needs the people's direct participation to shape them. The deliberately neutral backdrops strip away the pathos earlier periods gave these statues, leaving room for the accidents of time and poor craftsmanship - the detail the sculptor never intended, the figure reduced by weather to a pair of bast shoes and a jug, or to nothing but its legs - with the surrounding landscape playing as large a part in the image as the moment of the monument's erection: nature quietly swallowing a self-destroying archive that, it seems, only the photographer is interested in preserving.
