From the images of a fossil mermaid to virtual landscapes created using famous artworks as moulds, by way of paradoxical miracles and fake botanical plates: the aim is to spread "doubt" in the mind of the viewer. The stars are midges and dust on a car windscreen, behind the terrorist hides an ordinary actor, and an imaginary Russian astronaut vanishes in space as well as from every document and official photograph. Through these images, with an ironic and disillusioned eye, Fontcuberta deals with broader subjects: the role of religion in society and politics, criticising superstition and the irrational; the limits of the ideas of authorship, style, signature and authenticity of a work of art; and realism conceived as "belief", "faith" or conviction.
