The book follows an almost narrative thread that moves from the "account of reality" to "experimentation on the medium", then to the contemporary "experimentation on language", to the large body of work around Polaroids and installations, and finally to the two ideas of "matter and memory", the two poles (positive and negative, interchangeable) in which all of Migliori’s volcanic energy is at work. Migliori surprises everyone who approaches him: for his seismic output, for the variety of his projects, for the constant shifts of language he has brought to his research. But the real surprise lies in the absolute coherence he has kept over so many years, from experiments to figurative images to the boldest new installations: all his work rests on a single language to explore, photography, the essential raw material for creating his visual dreams. To photograph, he has said, means to choose and to transform. In his work matter is always transformed into something else: a shred of memory for posterity, a question for his contemporaries, a new road to travel.

ABOUT

The project

SpineIndex is an archive of independent books on photography and visual culture: photobooks, publications, design books and self-published editions — the kind of work that rarely makes it into bookshop windows or mainstream catalogues. It exists to document, connect, and keep visible a world of publishers, artists, and makers who operate outside conventional distribution. A living reference for anyone who takes this territory seriously — collectors, researchers, students, and the simply curious.

Images and rights

Covers, interior pages and descriptions are shown to introduce and identify the books, always crediting publisher, author and photographer and linking back to the publisher. We ask publishers for their permission, and we remove anything on request within 7 days. If you are a publisher, an author or a photographer and you want something changed or removed, write to info@spineindex.it.
